The "Burgess Canteen" at Sweeney Park
The canteen will be dedicated in memory of Bill Burgess, a strong supporter of youth sports programs in Manchester-Essex. Bill grew up in Manchester and spent many summer days playing pick-up baseball and hoops at Sweeney Park (aka "Eaglehead"). He coached numerous baseball, softball, and soccer teams there as well. Bill succumbed to cancer in 2005 after a long and courageous battle. He is survived by his wife Maria and children Joseph, Ellen, and Will, all of whom share in the fun and sport at Sweeney Park. Bill's brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends live in Manchester and other neighboring towns as well.
The canteen will provide an opportunity to serve drinks and light food during games and events at the Park. Revenues from the canteen will ensure funding for Manchester Essex Little League and other youth programs for many years to come.
In addition to the canteen, the Manchester-Essex Little League is establishing a college scholarship fund in Bill's name for a graduating senior who went through the MELL baseball or softball programs.
We are expecting to fund the canteen and the scholarship with donations from local companies and MELL families. If you would like to make a donation, any amount will be appreciated and recognized, please use this donation form.
Thank you,
MELL Board of Directors
