The following is a letter from the Hamilton-Wenham Little League Safety Officer, forwarded to us, that we feel parents should read:
HWLL Community:
Last week a sibling of one of our minor league players
was approached by a man during a minor league game at
Patton Park.
The man, who was hanging around the swing set/playground
area just beyond left field, approached the child.
According to the child the man said something to the
effect of "I have some toys in my truck."
The child's mother saw her son begin to walk with the
stranger and quickly intervened. Thankfully, the child
was completely unharmed.
Given the circumstance, her child's safety was the only
thing on her mind and no additional details were
obtained while the man got in his
truck and drove off. The Police were informed of the
incident. The Police stated the best thing to do was to
spread the word to everyone we know.
This exact scenario was covered at our annual safety
meeting where we reviewed the number of registered sex
offenders in Hamilton and Wenham and provided some
cautionary steps a HWLL volunteer should take.
Below we list these protective steps for your reference
and use at your practices and games.
Cautionary steps such as;
• taking note of people in the surrounding area and
around the playing fields
• not allowing players to stray from the practice or
team
• never leaving a player alone after a practice
• never allowing a player to walk home alone
• have all contact information on player's parents
or legal guardian with you
• requiring parents to notify the Coach when a
babysitter or someone other than the parent will
be dropping off or picking up a player
• who that designated pick-up person will be and
what he/she looks like
This is a cautionary tale that hopefully we can all
learn from and a scary reminder that our parents,
coaches and our entire community needs to remain acutely
aware of our surroundings and remain vigilant in looking
out for each other.
Please share this with the community. It is not the
Board's place to dictate parenting choices, but I have
shared the incident with my two
children, and urge you to consider doing the same.
Thanks,
Chris Dearborn

All players must fill out the Medical Release Form if you have not done so already, and give it to your coach.
